How to use PGP on Private.Ki
You don’t have to be a cryptography expert to use PGP with Private.Ki – it’s built in and works automatically.
Private.Ki uses OpenPGP under the hood for all messages, which means every email and messenger/chat message is already protected by PGP encryption without any special action required from you.
When you send a message to another Private.Ki user, the app uses the recipient’s public key to encrypt it, and they use their private key to decrypt it – this all happens behind the scenes. Your private keys are generated and stored encrypted (protected by your passphrase) on Private.Ki, so only you can unlock them.
If you need to use PGP in a more manual way (for example, communicating with someone using PGP via another email service), Private.Ki provides tools for that too: You can import external PGP keys into your account and manage your key pairs in the settings.
For instance, if a colleague wants your public key to send you encrypted mail from outside Private.Ki, you can download or share your public key easily (see Sending your PGP key to somebody).
Advanced PGP users will be happy to know that Private.Ki supports key management features similar to other encrypted email services. The system will also handle key exchange with other Private.Ki users automatically.
In summary, Private.Ki brings you the strength of PGP encryption without the usual hassle – most users won’t need to think about keys at all, as encryption just works by default. But for those who want to see the nuts and bolts, the options are there: you can view your public key, export it, verify fingerprints, and even use your own custom PGP keys within Private.Ki if desired.
