Receiving encrypted emails (internally)
When you receive an email from another Private.Ki user (with an @private.ki email address), it's automatically encrypted with PGP. The metadata of the message is encrypted with AES.
There is no way to send a non-encrypted email within Private.Ki, we don't allow it. (However, you can send non-encrypted emails to external users.)
The email is delivered to your inbox on your device in encrypted form. The sender’s client has encrypted the message using your public key before it even reached our servers. This means the content, attachments, and even subject line are stored on our server in an encrypted state. We (the server) merely route this encrypted package to your mailbox; we cannot decrypt or read it.
When you click on the message in your inbox, your client automatically decrypts and displays it like this:
The green closed lock icon shows you that this is an encrypted email.
When you hover over the button with your mouse, it shows PGP-encrypted:
If the email has file attachments, clicking on them will trigger a decrypt and download. The attachments are stored encrypted on the server (same as the rest of the email content), and they are automatically decrypted on your device when you click to download them.
You can directly reply and your reply tho the recipient, and your reply message, will likewise be encrypted for the recipient. Just click on Reply at the bottom of the message:
This will open the message compose window with a quoted reply.
